Today I attended a panel discussion and instructional session sponsored by the Crime Writers of Canada. I went as a volunteer and as such accomplished two important objectives. One, because I was a volunteer, I greeted all of the participants and they in turn met me. This raised my profile within the writing community… a good way, to do so. Organizers and participants generally think positively of volunteers. If your face keeps appearing in this role, you will eventually be branded as someone held in a positive context. I’m also able to interact face to face with others who are successful in their craft and well…something is bound to rub off sooner or later.
Secondly, as always I managed to gleen a few gems from the material presented. It never hurts to hear how the experts do it and you can keep up to date on what others are working on or trends that may be emerging. Lots of inspirational ideas emerge from group discussions; both the structured and spontaneous variety. Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience and for those who work in semi-isolation, it can help to maintain a fresh outlook.
