Apparently, with the advent of desktop technology, there are so many neophyte writers competing for publication that the industry has become constipated. Publishers and agents attempt to digest an increasing mass of perspective manuscript, weeding out all but the exceptional. This subjective filter has brought us to a situation where failure to evoke a clever, punchy query letter is a fatal omission for new writers. Undoubtedly some brilliant manuscript is lost, unable to pass muster by the gatekeepers of the publishing world.
